Priapus, son of Aphrodite and Dionysis, was cursed with impotence by Hera. In the end, his permanent state of lust gave him a perma-erection.

But determining the average size of a penis is more complicated than you might think.  Most size statistics come from popular culture rather than true fact. Here are some scientific facts:

The average size of an erect penis is 5.1 to 5.7 inchesThe average size of a flaccid penis is 3.5  to 4.0 inches

Men who appear in sexually explicit films are often chosen because their penis is larger than the average penis. The industry heightens this image by using techniques that increase the perception of the size of the star’s penis.

Being a good lover is not dependent on the size of the penis. “Bigger is better” is a myth.  Being a good lover is about technique, attention to partner’s needs, communication, and the expression of desire. Penis size is usually more a man’s concern than their partner’s.

Other penis size variables:
The slang term “grower” is used to describe a penis that appears small when flaccid but when erect is larger than expected.

The slang term “shower” is used to describe a  penis that appears large when flaccid and whose size doesn’t change as much when erect.

Planned Parenthood of Northern New England’s Education Department carefully selects all weekly questions. All questions are actual inquiries made to PPNNE by college-aged students.

Should you have a question you would like to see included, please send an email to goddess@ppnne.org
