Week 22-Is there a difference between sexual orientation and sexual practice?

January 16, 2009

To receive the weekly question per text, text FACTS to 90999.

 Yes, there is a difference.

Sexual orientation is about attraction – it is to whom you are erotically and who you desire.  Sexual practice or behavior is how you actually express your sexuality and how you sexually express yourself.

Sexual orientation is NOT a choice – a person cannot decide who will turn them on.

Sexual practice or behavior IS a choice – a person decides how to express their sexuality – where, with whom, and in what way.

In a perfect world, sexuality is fluid. Sexual expression and identity can change over time depending on the culture’s acceptance of a continuum of sexual expression.

Planned Parenthood of Northern New England’s Education Department carefully selects all weekly questions. All questions are actual inquiries made to PPNNE by college-aged students.

Should you have a question you would like to see included, please send an email to goddess@ppnne.org
