It depends on what you mean by “broken.”  It is practically impossible to break a penis, even with very energetic sex or masturbation, because there are no bones in a penis.  In fact, there are only two tubes in the penis.

Let’s talk about these tubes.

They fill with blood and cause the penis to become hard. These tubes can be hurt through the tearing of the tube’s surrounding tissue. This is often called a “penile fracture”. For this to happen, a man’s penis must be erect and something has to fall directly on the erect penis.

A man’s penis can also be hurt when it is erect and hits an immovable object, like his partner’s pubic bone or a door.

These injuries present with swelling, pain, and bruises that turn black and blue. It is important to go to a medical provider if an injury such as this occurs. These injuries can be healed through surgery and, yes, splints.

Remember – it is rare that these tears occur and again they do not occur through sex or masturbation.

Planned Parenthood of Northern New England’s Education Department carefully selects all weekly questions. All questions are actual inquiries made to PPNNE by college-aged students.

Should you have a question you would like to see included, please send an email to goddess@ppnne.org
